Module 2: Why Coding and Robotics Matter

Introduction to Coding and Robotics (Beginner)

Coding and Robotics are key skills in today’s classroom and form an important part of the CAPS curriculum in South Africa. For many teachers, this subject is new, which is why starting with the basics is essential.

In this beginner course, educators are introduced to core coding concepts such as patterns, sequencing, algorithms, loops, and decision-making, using simple, age-appropriate explanations and classroom examples. No prior coding experience is required.

Robotics is explored through unplugged activities and basic digital concepts, helping teachers understand how robots work using ideas such as inputs (sensors), outputs (actions), and instructions. The focus is on teaching concepts, not building complex machines.

This course is designed to help teachers:

  • Understand Coding & Robotics in a CAPS context

  • Gain confidence in teaching the subject

  • Apply concepts through practical classroom activities

  • Support learners’ problem-solving and logical thinking skills

By the end of the course, educators will be equipped with the knowledge and strategies needed to confidently introduce Coding and Robotics in their classrooms and support learners at beginner level.
